goodbye VHS
October 10th, 2005 9:20 am
Thanks to Joni's suggestion I unloaded around fifty VHS tapes at Movie Trading Company yesterday. The store credit was enough to get me DVD copies of Labyrinth, Sin City, Ju-on, and The Grudge with only a small cost difference. I did keep a few tapes, of things that either don't exist on DVD yet or things where the DVD release is the same quality of the VHS (in the case of My Neighbor Totoro).
A few of the tapes I sold are movies that I do want to eventually replace on DVD. I already bought Labyrinth, and there is a similar no-frills release of Dark Crystal that will do just fine. Unfortunately I found that the lone Last Unicorn release is a shoddy fullscreen transfer, and I probably would have been better off just keeping my VHS edition. I'm hoping the live-action remake next year may encourage a proper DVD release of the original. I also found some disturbing info about the current releases of the movie that have me hoping the remake will be kinder to Mr. Beagle.
