Fresh Fish Served Daily

About a month or so ago Dane and I saw that the Drafthouse had a listing for a Lord of the Rings feast. All three movies (the first two as the extended editions) shown back to back with a seven-course meal served at all of the Hobbit mealtimes. It sounded like it would be really intense but also really fun. The tickets were a bit expensive, but when we considered the amount of food and time involved we thought it was something worth doing at least once in our lives.

It was amazing! Both of us really enjoyed ourselves. Each meal was just the right amount of food so we didn't feel stuffed, and it was great seeing the movies again. I thought that doing it once would be enough, but I would definitely consider doing it again in the future.

My only complaint is that they showed the theatrical version of Return of the King. Their explanation was that the extended version was never done in 35mm, and they didn't want to show a DVD after showing the 35mm versions of the previous movies. I sort of understand that, but I was pretty disappointed that I didn't get the see the Mouth of Sauron on the big screen.

Fellowship of the Ring (9am - 1:30pm)

First Breakfast
Scrambled eggs, 2 slices of bacon, grilled mushrooms and 2 orange slices

Before the movies started was really the only time I was actively hungry all day, and this was just what I needed. They served breakfast almost as soon as the first movie started.

Second Breakfast
Strawberries and cream

This was one of my favorites. The strawberries were fresh and sweet and the cream was the perfect consistency.

Elevensies
2 pan-seared sausages, grilled half-tomato, 3 slices of hard cheese, cabbage, and pickles

The pickles were thin sliced and not your run of the mill dill pickles. They went very well with the sausages. I even ate all of the cabbage, and I'm not usually a fan of cabbage.

The Two Towers (2pm - 5:30pm)

Luncheon
Syrah braised spareribs with mashed potatoes, roast baby carrots and a brown ale

The spareribs were a bit fatty, but as long as I got a leaner bit of meat with it I didn't mind. They were well-seasoned and tender. The potatoes were buttery and smooth, the carrots were flavorful. The beer they chose was a good pairing with the food.

Afternoon Tea
Baby greens with garlic blackberry vinaigrette, cheese herb galette, 2 tea cookies, cup of tea

I think the tea was some kind of strong earl grey. It was lovely with the cookies. The salad and galette went well together. It was nice to have something light at that point.

The Return of the King (6pm - 9:30pm)

Dinner
Stewed rabbit with potatoes, carrots, and leeks, fresh garden herbs with crusty bread

I don't know that I'd call this a stew, it was more like a pile of ingredients with a beef broth drizzled over it. The bread was perfect for soaking up the broth after the rabbit was all gone.

Supper
Swirl of tomato and spinach soups with a wild mushroom crouton and an apple turnover

This one was super rich. The crouton did help a bit to tame it. The turnover was served fresh out of the oven, and the pasty was good and flaky.

They sent us out the door with packets of Lembas bread.
